Celebrating 100+ years. A modern marketing solutions agency founded on old school values of hard work, integrity and honesty.
Banker & Brisebois
Banker & Brisebois offers marketing solutions to companies across the nation — from global names and local favorites, to some of the most trusted brands in the retail industry — we offer customized programs that only the best promotional minds can provide.
Our story began in 1912, when Roscoe C. Banker set up his accounting practice in the back room of a prominent furniture store in Detroit. In lieu of rent, the owner asked Banker to take over the advertising for the store. Banker created promotions that worked so well that the furniture company prospered in the Motor City. Word of Banker’s advertising success quickly got the attention of other retail store owners. Soon Banker stopped his accounting services, took a partner, and focused solely on advertising — quickly growing the firm to a national operation.
Let us put our talent, experience & knowledge to work for your company!
Harry L. Gilmore
May 22, 1922 – April 27, 2019
Harry was the heart and soul of the Banker & Brisebois agency for 67 years.
Born in Oklahoma City to Basil Woolley Gilmore and Hazel Edwards Gilmore as their only child, the family later relocated to Houston where he graduated from Houston High School. He attended the University of Missouri until World War II interrupted his education at which time he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and became a pilot with the rank of First Lieutenant.
After returning from the service, he continued his studies at the University of Missouri, completed his degree in Journalism and married the love of his life, Marianna. The couple moved to Joplin, Missouri after graduating where Harry took a job with Newman Furniture Company as their Advertising Director.
In 1952 he brought his family to Detroit and began working for R.C. Banker & Company as a layout artist and salesman. The company, founded in 1912, was the premiere advertising agency for the retail furniture industry. He eventually partnered with Russell Whitney, Creative Director with J. L. Hudson Department Store and together they purchased the company from Mr. Banker.
When Whitney retired in the early 1960’s Harry purchased his shares. In the late 60’s, he also purchased a rival agency, Evans & Brisebois also located in Detroit, and formed Banker & Brisebois. Harry remained Chairman, going to work every day until the company was sold in early 2019. Needless to say, Harry loved the business, and his customers loved him.
He was also an avid golfer and played in the Oakland University Golf League well into his 90’s. He shot five holes-in-one over the years with the last one occurring on his 72nd birthday, and shot a few boogies as well.
He was a dedicated, loving husband for 73 years, a father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved his family and bragged about them every chance he got.
He loved his family. He loved his work. He loved his golf.
It’s hard to say goodbye to someone like Harry. He remains in our hearts and memories forever, and we will work to carry on his mission of trust, loyalty and teamwork.
